PRISON BREAK

Have you ever driven past the old Joliet Prison and wondered what it was like to be on the inside of those massive stone walls? I recently learned that the walls were actually built by the first inmates,  who dug the limestone chunks out of a nearby quarry.  It seems so ironic that men would toil away to build their own prison, working hard to form what would ultimately become a barrier between themselves and everything they may have really wanted.

Then I thought about how much that is like our own lives.  The Bible says that our sin separates us from God.  He is absolutely pure, and our sin is like a huge wall between us and him.  It keeps us from a relationship with him now and makes it impossible for him to take us to heaven when we die.

The great news is that God doesn’t want us to stay in our sin-prison in this life, or to be condemned to everlasting punishment in the next.  He sent his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come to earth in order to serve our sentence.  On the cross, God punished Jesus for all our sins.  He gives a complete pardon to everyone who acknowledges their own guilt and trusts Christ as their Savior.  It’s really better than a prison break, because if God wipes your record clean you are saved forever.

The Bible says, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” (1 Timothy 1:15)
