THE “CHRIST” PART OF CHRISTMAS
Have you ever wondered if the “Christ” part of Christmas relates to you at all? I mean, he lived so long ago and so far away. What real difference does it make to us?
Below are several easily understood quotations from the Bible that show what Christ has to do with us. Since they are from God’s Word, please read them as God’s message to you. I think you’ll find them highly relevant.
“There is no difference, for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:22,23
The Bible says that every single one of us is a sinner. You knew that, of course: nobody’s perfect. But before we brush that aside and comfort ourselves that we’re all the same, just think about what it means. Sinners. People who do what’s wrong, who go their own way, who do what they want to do in spite of what God says is right. People who have impure thoughts, who say wrong words, who do things that God forbids. That’s us, isn’t it?
The Bible tells us more . . .
“The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men . . . ” Romans 1:18
God is holy, 100% pure and sinless. Though he loves every one of us, we offend him daily as we break his laws. The Bible warns us of eternal punishment in hell if we die with our sins unforgiven. But God, who lovingly warns us, is longing to save us. It is possible for him to forgive us, because
“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” 1 Timothy 1:15
“The punishment that brought us peace was on him” Isaiah 53:5, New International Version
“Christ died for our sins” 1 Corinthians 15:3
This is where the “Christ” part of Christmas comes in, and this is how it all becomes relevant to you and me. God sent his Son from heaven to take care of the problem of our sins. You likely know the story of the manger in Bethlehem where the baby Jesus was laid. But did you know that the focal point of the whole Bible is actually not the manger, but the cross where the Savior died? There he was punished by God for all our sins.
Does this automatically take away the guilt of the whole human race? No, but these last few verses from the Bible show how any individual can have their own sins forgiven.
“Everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins.” Acts 10:43, ESV
“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23
“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.” John 3:36, ESV
How can we have our sins forgiven? By trusting the Lord Jesus Christ. We cannot save ourselves; that is why he came and suffered and died on the cross for our sins. God gives eternal life to all who trust, not in their own efforts, but in the Lord Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for them.
This is what the “Christ” part of Christmas is about. Does it relate to you?
